Driving Toward a Future Without Childhood Cancer

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize the courageous children and families facing pediatric cancer, along with the doctors, nurses, researchers, and caregivers working tirelessly to find better treatments and cures.

Every 36 minutes, a child in the United States is diagnosed with cancer. That represents approximately 14,600 children and families receiving life-changing news each year. No child should have to face cancer, and no family should have to face that journey alone.

At Spokane Hyundai, we are honored to partner with Hyundai Motor America in support of Hyundai Hope On Wheels. This remarkable nonprofit organization is dedicated to fighting childhood cancer by funding lifesaving pediatric cancer research, supporting patient programs, and raising awareness across the country.

Spokane Hyundai’s Commitment to the Cause

At Spokane Hyundai, this cause is more than a national initiative. It is an opportunity for our dealership, our staff, and our customers to help make a meaningful difference for children and families.

A contribution is made to Hyundai Hope On Wheels with every eligible new Hyundai sold at Spokane Hyundai. Last year alone, vehicles purchased from our dealership generated more than $14,000 to support pediatric cancer research and programs benefiting children and their families.

We are incredibly proud of that contribution because it was made possible by our customers. Every new Hyundai purchased helped support researchers, medical professionals, hospitals, patient-assistance programs, and families facing one of life’s most difficult challenges.

Spokane Hyundai’s contribution is part of a larger commitment from Hyundai Motor America and its dealer network. By the end of 2026, Hyundai Hope On Wheels expects its lifetime contributions to exceed $303 million. This funding has supported more than 1,500 childhood cancer research grants at over 175 hospitals and research institutions across the United States.

These grants help researchers better understand childhood cancers, develop new treatments, improve standards of care, and provide direct support to children and their families. Today, more than 85 percent of children diagnosed with cancer survive, but the work must continue until every child has the opportunity to grow up, pursue their dreams, and enjoy a healthy future.

Every Handprint Tells a Story 

One of the most recognizable symbols of Hyundai Hope On Wheels is the colorful handprint.

Each year, Hyundai Hope On Wheels visits children’s hospitals across the country to present grants and raise awareness. During its signature Handprint Ceremonies, children affected by cancer place their painted handprints on special Hyundai vehicles that travel throughout the United States.

Every handprint represents a story. It may belong to a child currently undergoing treatment, a survivor celebrating another milestone, or a child whose memory continues to inspire the search for a cure.

Together, these handprints are a powerful reminder of the courage of these children and why this work must continue.

Childhood cancer affects thousands of children, families, and communities every year. While the challenge is enormous, so is the strength and determination of the people committed to overcoming it.
