Second Harvest Needs Your Support
At Spokane Hyundai we believe helping others and helping out our local community is an important part of who we are. We strive to be impactful members of the community in and around the Spokane area that we call home. One of the charities we partner with is Second Harvest, an organization that strives to battle hunger not just in Spokane but across eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. Spokane Hyundai has been donating and organizing food donations for Second Harvest since 2019.
Even including annual contributions from Spokane Hyundai and many other charitable organizations and businesses across Spokane, Second Harvest needs your help to accommodate this year’s surge in food demand.
A Building Dedicated to Addressing Child Hunger
The Wolff Family Child Hunger Solution Center includes 13,000 square feet of warehouse space dedicated to getting more food to youth who need it most. This additional physical space helps us manage more food supplies for child-focused programs like Bite2Go, which provides weekend meals and snacks for thousands of students in need.
In partnership with At The Core –a backpack food program – (www.atthecore.online), Bite2Go provides children with a mix of easy-to-open, single-serving, nutritious, nonperishable food items for meals and snacks over the weekend during the school year. Today, Second Harvest, along with generous community organizations who “adopt” a school, are providing nearly 6,000 elementary, middle, and high school students food for the weekends through our Bite2Go and Bite2Go XL programs. “Adoptive organizations,” including businesses, civic groups and churches, cover the cost of the food, while school counselors and other staff identify kids who would benefit from receiving food from Bite2Go. Many of these children face chronic food shortages at home and without Bite2Go would not get enough to eat on Saturdays and Sundays.
School Food Pantries
Second Harvest also feeds children at school pantries in high-need schools throughout our service territory thanks to partners like Communities in Schools (www.spokane.ciswa.org) and school staff. Second Harvest stocks the shelves of the pantry, and school staff and student leaders ensure it gets to students in need.
Why Second Harvest Needs Your Help
A combination of inflation being at a 40 year-high, soaring food prices, supply chain issues, and a lower crop yields across the country this year has led to many of the shelves at local Spokane food banks to remain empty this holiday season.
This rise in costs across all areas of life has impacted not only how much food is donated each year, but also has led to a large increase in how much food goes out the door. In fact, despite averaging around 32-35 million pounds of food donated per year, this number shot up to 52 million pounds of food during the height of the pandemic.
How Can You Help?
The good news is that there are plenty of ways we can help out Second Harvest! While there is a year round need for donations and volunteers, the Holiday season sees a large spike in those who need our assistance. Anyone looking to give back can make a financial donation by clicking here.
