Hyundai Ranks as one of the Top Vehicle Brands in J.D. Power Dependability Study
J.D. Power has released its annual dependability study that ranks automotive brands based on how reliable their vehicles are. The Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) focuses on problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles and measures how many problems are experienced per 100 vehicles of that brand. Here are the results:
As you can see, Hyundai and Korean automakers in general, dominated the brand rankings and consistently have the least problematic vehicles. Hyundai ranked 3rd, narrowly missing out on the top spot with 148 problems per 100 vehicles. Compared to the industry average of 192, Hyundai owners enjoy fewer headaches over the first 3 years of ownership.
Beyond the entirety of the Hyundai lineup performing well, the Hyundai Sonata was ranked as the most dependable midsized card on the road today, while the Tucson, Elantra and Veloster all received top 3 spots in their respective categories.

How Does J.D. Power Measure Dependability?
From the J.D. Power website, here is how vehicles are ranked on dependability:
The J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) focuses on problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles. Study findings are used extensively by manufacturers worldwide to help them design and build better vehicles—which typically retain higher resale value—and by consumers to help them make more informed choices for both new and used vehicles.
Problem symptoms are evaluated in nine vehicle system categories:
- Exterior
- Driving Experience
- Features/Controls/Displays (FCD)
- Driving Assistance
- Infotainment
- Seats
- Climate
- Interior
