Hyundai Fully Reaveals the All-New 2024 Kona

At the New York International Auto Show, Hyundai debuted the 2024 Kona Electric, Limited, and N Line models in North America. The all-new Kona is positioned as a premium contender in the small SUV segment, with the all-electric variant leading the pack by offering advanced safety, convenience, and an impressive estimated electric range of 260 miles, according to Hyundai’s internal estimates.

The second-generation Kona boasts one of the most comprehensive product packages in the small SUV category, including the widest range of powertrains. Customers can select from electric and internal combustion powertrains, with a sporty N Line version also available. The all-new 2024 Kona is set to hit U.S. dealerships this summer, while the Kona Electric will be available in late fall.

Hyundai took an unconventional approach by prioritizing the development of an electrified powertrain for the new Kona platform, in accordance with the company’s announcement of an accelerated electrification strategy. This strategy aims to introduce 11 new Hyundai electric vehicles to the global market by 2030.

An EV-driven Exterior Design

Hyundai took a different approach for the 2024 Kona by switching from the traditional development process of ICE-to-EV platform to an EV-to-ICE process. This resulted in an innovative and futuristic exterior that highlights the Kona’s distinctive appearance through an intriguing blend of sleek and rugged design elements, with a focus on electric vehicle features.

Between the aerodynamic nose and rear liftgate, sculpted wheel arch armor and parametric surfaces add character to pure volume, with dynamic chrome lines connecting the belt line to the rear spoiler and integrated center high-mounted stop lamp. 

On the Electric variant, a Pixelated Seamless Horizon Lamp and Pixel graphics add a unique flourish. In addition, available vivid exterior colors further emphasize Kona’s iconic design, taking inspiration from the diverse lifestyles of a broad spectrum of customers.

A Roomier and More Versatile Interior

Hyundai has designed a larger interior space for the Kona model, building upon its upscaled dimensions and universal architecture derived from electric vehicles. This larger “living space” is intended to cater to a wider range of customer lifestyles. The front row of the Kona is driver-centric, featuring a floating horizontal C-Pad that highlights the vehicle’s high-tech character. This C-Pad integrates dual 12.3-inch panoramic display screens for added convenience and style.

Hyundai has reconfigured the ergonomic layout of the Kona to provide a more versatile and comfortable space for both driver and passengers. The shift-by-wire gear selector has been relocated from the center console to a stalk behind the steering wheel, freeing up storage in the open console area. The layout also includes the relocation of driver controls around the steering wheel, creating a multi-use center console storage area with a unique rotational cupholder design. 

The Kona’s larger and wider interior is emphasized by the slimmed-down front seats, which maximize rear passenger legroom, and the Curveless Bench Seat in the second row, which enhances available space. Additionally, the Kona offers ambient interior lighting options that can correspond to drive modes, acceleration, or suit the driver’s mood. Furthermore, a two-stage latching system allows the rear seat to recline for added comfort.
